BLOOD AT THE ROOT

In the pre-production process, I used d&b ArrayCalc renderings to demonstrate ideas for system design as we worked through options before load-in. The first two images below show two sub-placement options we discussed. Our limited inventory of subwoofers presented a challenge when it came to how to create the low-frequency support the sound design needed. We had 3 d&b B6 subs to work with. They are not flyable, so the challenge was finding where we can place them on the ground that was out of the way but still provided the response and power we needed from the system. We decided on a cardioid array under the stage (shown in the second photo). The third photo shows the planned system as we went into load-in. Once we had the speakers in the air, we identified a miscommunication between the sound design team and the lighting design team. I was able to quickly calculate a few options using the files I had pre-created to present some options for the designers in the room in order to determine a solution quickly that didn't sacrifice the sound quality from the balcony. The fourth drawing shows the solution with the center speaker removed to allow lighting the space they needed.
